Addiction is the act of becoming physiologically and/or psychologically dependent on a drug or other harmful substance. It is to turn one's life over to a mood altering substance, causing periods of unmanageability and turbulence.

Addiction is a disease, that affects not only the substance user, but families as well. It does not discriminate. Treatment can and does work.

Denial usually allows a substance abuse problem to continue and often get worse. The drug of choice often enables the chemically dependent person to deal with everyday problems that seem to enormous to handle. This causes the chemically dependent person to minimize the extent of his or her problem and sometimes deny that one exists. Every person goes through periods of denial because of fear. The chemically dependent person fears being labeled an “alcoholic” or even worse “drug addict”.
